Unit 8, Lesson 1: Intro to Unit 8
Learning Target: I can predict the positive and negative aspects of interconnecting cultures
Class Activities:
1. Students came in and took an "Intro to Unit 8" worksheet. The do now was to plot some data onto a graph of changing populations and analyze it.
2. I explained that the last unit's threshold was "agriculture". We reviewed that agriculture was so important because it created a food surplus, and with a food surplus, people could concentrate on other things-- creating government, art, architecture, religion, social classes, etc. The civilizations we studied all had different forms of this, but the theme is the same. Surplus= civilization.
3. Looking at the Do Now, we see that in the post-classical era (500-1500AD), the population increases rapidly. Looking at part 2, we see that there are lots more distinct cultures rising, and they're starting to overlap more. (look up timemaps.com for the map we looked at.) The result is that we see a greater degree of cultural interactions, which can be a good thing and a bad thing.
4. We looked at some excerpts of Marco Polo, a famous Italian Explorer. He saw things on his travels through Asia that he had never seen before, and he brought stories of these things back. This is an example of cultural diffusion.
5. Together we defined cultural diffusion as, "a mix of cultures." Students then worked independently to complete Section 4.
