Unit 1, Lesson 8: Why Origin Stories?
Learning Target: I can makes inferences about a culture based upon its origin story
Class Activities:
1. Students took out their Comparing Origin Stories worksheet from the previous lesson. They got into their origin story groups while I passed back work.
2. We went over Activity 2, question 1 on the Comparing Origin Stories sheet, as many people didn't seem to understand the question. We discussed how people used their surroundings to craft explanations for how the universe came to be. For example, if you lived in a mostly snowy climate 10,000 years ago, your origin story probably would have included snow or a snow god, etc.
3. A representative from each origin story group stood up, quickly summarized their origin story, and if applicable, made some inferences about it. Listening students took notes.
4. After all the groups presented, students individually completed Activity 3 on their Comparing Origin Stories worksheet. In some classes, we had time to discuss the last question, "Why do people have origin stories?". At the end of class, I collected all the sheets as students walked out the door.
