Unit 3, Lesson 4: Star Comics, Day 2
Learning Target: I can create a comic that demonstrates my understanding of a star's life cycle.
Class Activities:
1. Students came in-- no handout today, since we're just working on the comic strips.
2. We took a moment to complete the cover page of the unit (See unit 3, lesson 1 for that handout if needed.) Find the equation boxes on the bottom. In the top equation boxes, you should write, "hydrogen and helium" + "gravity & high temperature" = stars light up. We also discussed why it's important-- because all these stars suddenly give us all these new sources of energy that didn't exist before. Finally, we discussed why I'm teaching about the stars at all. Students said a lot of different things, but two of the most common answers were:
-It's part of our scientific origin story
-Every threshold leads to different things. The stars explode and create all the elements that exist in the universe, and those elements are found all over our Earth today. It's cool and awesome.
3. The rest of the time was spent working on the comic strips. Some students had already finished theirs, so I looked over them and made suggestions for improvement. The biggest thing I noticed is that students weren't reading the instruction sheet/rubric, so they were missing some key parts of the assignment.
Papers handed in today:
None
Homework:
Comic Strip (due Monday for Section 1, Tuesday for Section 2 & 3, and Wednesday for Section 4)
