Unit 8, Lesson 6: Causes of the Crusades
Learning Target: I can explain multiple causes of the Crusades
Class Activities:
1. Students came in and took a Byzantine Empire half sheet and a Crusades Causes handout. There was no do now.
2. We took notes on the Byzantine Empire. Basically you need to know that the Byzantine Empire used to be a part of the Roman Empire, then became known as the Byzantine Empire when the Roman Empire fell.
They were kind of like Rome: Justinian Code was based off Roman laws, and the Hagia Sophia used a lot of Roman architecture
They were kind of unlike Rome: Their religion, though Christian, split off from Catholicism and became its own thing. Also they absorbed some Islamic influences in their art and architecture.
They're famous for: Being the center of trade (their capital, Constantinople, is right in between the Mediterranean and Black Seas) and thus the center of cultural diffusion.
3. We switched to the Crusades causes sheet and took some notes on what the Crusades were and how they began.
4. Students analyzed a speech by Pope Urban and came up with reasons why he called for a Crusade.
Papers handed in today:
Medieval and Islamic half sheets
Homework:
