Unit 1, Lesson 5: Three Reads Method
Learning Target: I can use the three reads method to analyze a text.
Class Activities:
1. Students picked up two handouts from the back of the room:
2. We had a brief discussion about origin stories, and we copied the definition for origin stories on our vocabulary sheets:
Origin Stories: an explanation of Earth's and humanity's beginnings.
We talked about what origin stories the students knew. Common ones were the Greek story, the Native American story, Genesis, and the scientific/Big Bang explanation. We also spent some time talking about people's beliefs and how even though we'll be looking at evidence for the Big Bang, that doesn't necessarily mean that people can't believe in other origin stories. We'll talk more about this later, too.
3. Three reads protocol is a method I use to read a text. After explaining it, I gave the rest of the time for the students to work on their 3 reads packet. The text we used, the modern origin story, is available in 3 levels, depending on how strong your reading skills are. 1070L is the highest (about a 9th grade level), 900L is next (a 7th grade level), and 700L is the last (about a 4th/5th grade level). Students picked the article they needed, then got to work.
Papers handed in today:
Scale HW sheet & timeline
Homework:
Finish 3 reads protocol packet and the first column of the origin stories chart (only the modern origin story column)
