Unit 4, Lesson 5: Plagiarism
Learning Target: I can explain what is expected of me on this star brochure.
Class Activities:
1. Students walked in and picked up a Star Brochure handout, then got to work on the do now.
2. We discussed the do now, which was, "Why do people plagiarize?" We got a lot of responses, from "They're lazy" to "They feel pressured to get good grades" to "They don't know they're doing wrong."
3. We then discussed the difference between intentional and unintentional plagiarism. Intentional plagiarism is copying a friend's homework, copying a website, buying an essay online, etc. It is purposeful cheating. Unintentional plagiarism is accidentally writing a phrase from a source instead of putting it in your own words, or forgetting to cite it properly. Neither form of plagiarism is okay.
4. Students did a worksheet in which they had to decide "is it plagiarism, or is it okay?" We went over the answers together. No need to make this up if you were absent, just make sure you understand what plagiarism is.
5. We discussed the planet brochure rubric and requirements, and how plagiarism will no be tolerated on it.
