Unit 5, Lesson 3: Darwin & Evolution
Learning Target: I can analyze how Charles Darwin’s observations supported his claim of natural selection.
Class Activities:
1. The kids walked in and took out the previous lessons handout, titled, "Developing the theory of Evolution: Darwin's Voyage on the Beagle". There was a handout that they got to work on. Basically it was to remind them of what people used to think caused life-- spontaneous generation, the idea that something (life) sprang from nothing. It is widely accepted today that evolution is how we came to be, and part of the reason why is because of all the evidence Darwin collected on his voyages.
2. We read the front part together, and located the Galapagos Islands on the map (the islands to the left of South America.) Then students used the class materials to complete the rest of the questions. It's a long assignment, but some kids did really well.
If you're still not sure what it means to evolve to meet your surroundings, don't worry. We'll do an activity tomorrow that I hope will help.
Papers handed in today:
Mini-Thresholds worksheet
Homework:
Finish Darwin and the the Theory of Evolution sheet.
