Unit 1, Lesson 3: Scale, Day 2
Learning Target: I can create a story arc that traces how thinking about the Universe has advanced over time.
Class Activities:
1. Students came in, sat with their partners, and took out their 3 Reads and Timeline.
2. The students had 15 minutes to share info about their astronomers with their partners. On the back of their timeline sheets, they had to write a simple narrative that explained how the model of the universe changed, from the earlier astronomer to the more recent one. For instance, if the pair had Ptolemy/Galileo, they might write something like, "Ptolemy was born in the year ______. He believed the universe looked like _____________. His evidence for this was ______________. Galileo had a similar/different model of universe-- his evidence was _____________."
3. Each Ptolemy/Galileo pair was matched up with a Copernicus/Newton pair. Each pair shared their narratives, so in the end, every student had information about all four astronomers.
4. As a class, we reviewed the final narrative of how the model of the universe changed over time. Ptolemy had a geocentric view of the universe, meaning that he believed the Earth was the center of the universe. This was simply based on observations he made of the night sky. Copernicus changed his theory of the solar system to a heliocentric model, which means that the sun was the center. He used observations too, but with some more sophisticated tools. Galileo improved the telescope to 4x its earlier power, which made his observations even more accurate. Finally, Newton developed
