Unit 8, Lesson 5: Islamic Empire & Medieval Europe
Learning Target: I can visually represent my understanding of Islamic Empire and Medieval Europe.
Class Activities:
1. Students came in and took a seat. We had a do now quiz! Most students did really well.
2. We finished up Medieval Europe by talking about the role of the church in society. We looked at some old paintings and text to discover some important things about the role of the Catholic Church in Medieval Europe:
3. We then looked at some pictures of Medieval cities. Know that Medieval cities were crowded, winding, and filthy. This (and people's lack of education and belief that religion could cure illness, etc.) made the Black Death super horrible and destructive. We watched a gross video about the Black Death too.
4. We spent the last 10 minutes drawing on the front of our trading cards. What comes to mind when we think about Islamic Europe and Medieval Europe? Your drawing doesn't need to be super great, but it would demonstrate understanding of the time period, including some specific facts.

2. We finished up Medieval Europe by talking about the role of the church in society. We looked at some old paintings and text to discover some important things about the role of the Catholic Church in Medieval Europe:
- They dominated life and often controlled the government
- People paid tithes (10% of their earnings) to the Church
- Monks were the mostly only literate people around, so people relied on them to read the Bible to them, copy texts, etc.
- Churches often ran types of health and food services for needy people
- However, many clergymen became corrupted, because there was so much money being thrown at them. Simony was common, which is basically when priests would promise forgiveness or a spot in heaven if you paid/made a donation. They used this money to buy furs, luxurious food, etc.
