Professional Background |
Hello!I'm Kelly, the 9th grade Global teacher at Harbor School for the 2015-2016 school year. Having a page all about me seems like I'm obsessed with myself. But hey, maybe you're interested in what exactly qualifies me to be teaching high school, which is a completely valid question. Maybe you've been wondering about my personal interests, which is a little weirder, but that too can be found on this page. Enjoy!

B.A. in English, B.A. in History from Washington & Lee University
This is where I learned tons about history (specialized in American history) and books (specialized in Western American literature)
Peace Corps El Salvador
Worked a lot with the local school, building a computer lab, leading youth development trainings, and teaching English classes. Of all the projects I did in my two years there, teaching was favorite, and it inspired me to become a teacher when I returned.
M.A. in Teaching of Social Studies from Teachers College, Columbia University
Pretty self-explanatory, actually. This is where I learned fancy terms for good teaching practices: differentiation, project-based learning, etc.
Urban Assembly New York Harbor School
2014-2015 was my first year here, and it was great, mostly because of the students. My main goal for this year is making Global History more interdisciplinary by incorporating content from the CTE programs, Science, and ELA.

Things I like
Books
Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris. So, so funny.
Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver.
The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay.
Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann.
Traveling
Highlights include studying poetry in Ireland, picking bananas in Australia, and scuba diving with whale sharks in Belize.
Sports
Playing tennis & soccer, cheering for the Chicago Bears, trash talking all Jets and Giants fans. It's almost too easy.
The fiddle
Okay, I do not actually know how to play the fiddle yet. It's my goal for this year.
