Unit 5, Lesson 4: Skittlefish
Learning Target: I can use skittles to simulate how extinction drives evolution.
Class Activities:
1. The kids walked in and took out the handout, titled "Skittlefish". They got to work on the do now, which was a series of T/F statements about evolution. Based on the previous lesson, some kids were still confused about evolution. The chief misconception was that evolution is a choice. For example, a giraffe needed a long neck, and so it developed one. NO! It's based on natural selection and survival of the fittest. To illustrate this, we did a skittlefish activity (credit goes to Big History community page, where I found this lab)
2. Each group got a baggie of skittles to serve as their "skittle fish" and a piece of construction paper, which served as the reef the skittle fish lived on. It didn't take much time. If you were absent, you can either pick up some skittle and do the activity yourself, or you can do it on a piece of paper.
3. When done, the students got to work on the analysis questions.
