Unit 8, Lesson 9: Mongols
Learning Target: I can explain the positive and negative aspects of the Mongols
Class Activities:
1. Students came in and picked up a blank Mongol half sheet. There was no do now.
2. I showed a 1 minute video clip of the Mongol terrain. (in clip below, watch 1:00-2:13) Together, we wrote a description of their terrain (steppes, which is cold, grassy, and flat) and described how it affected their way of life (caused them to be nomadic herders who lived on horseback). This went in the "famous for" section.
3. I passed out documents 1, 4, & 5, and the students used them to gather information and add it to the "famous for" section. The gist was that they were brutal in combat, especially if a city or civilization attempted to resist them.
4. I passed out documents 6-9, and the students used them to fill out the next portion of the half sheet. Although the Mongols were famous for their violence & nomadic ways, they actually were extremely tolerant of other religions and had a really peaceful reign with strict laws. It improved trade along the Silk Road because nobody robbed or stole.
