Learning Target: I can explain why symbolic language is a unique form of communication
Class Activities:
1. Students walked in and picked up the "Symbolic Language" handout. There was no do-now, we just went over the Evolution of Early Humans packet for a few minutes.
2. We discussed Part 1, the characteristics of being human. Some of the characteristics we came up with were:
3. I explained that we'd be focusing on symbolic language in the lesson. First, we discussed the efficiency of using gestural communication by playing a couple rounds of charades. Students agreed that it was easy to figure out the subject of the phrases, but difficult to convey anything else.
4. I explained that we can infer that early humans developed a simple language, probably just about things around them (trees, animals, fire, etc.) I gave them a list of 150 simple words and they had to choose situations to explain. An example is, "Why should you marry me?" and a student wrote, "I smell good. I is you dream. You is me light. Me and you death together." We discussed the efficiency of using simple language and decided that we weren't able to express complex expressions or feelings.
5. Students finished up with the Thinking Bigger section at the end-- most ended with no homework.
Papers handed in today:
Evolution of Early Humans packet
Homework:
Symbolic Language worksheet
