Unit 7, Lesson 12: 8 Features of Civilization
Learning Target: I can explain the 8 features of civilization
Class Activities:
1. Students came in and grabbed an "8 Features of Civilization" handout. The do now was 2 multiple choice questions (the answer to #1 was C, #2 was B). Ideally, they shouldn't have to cram information/facts about tons of different civilizations into their heads. Instead, they should understand larger concepts, like the pros and cons of different physical features, and apply them logically to Regents questions.
2. Students worked together to brainstorm ideas to Part 1 on the worksheet, and then we went over them as a class. A common "pro" to have a surplus of food was that there was now time to develop new skills and technology. A common "con" was that the people would be really disorganized, and maybe not get their share of the food. I explained that early civilizations had to answer these kinds of concerns, too.
3. We took notes on the 8 features of civilization (part 2). Use the powerpoint to fill this part out.
4. Students worked on the back of the handout, creating their own civilizations and explaining how it related to the 8 features of civilization. A fairly easy lesson, I think-- I just want the kids to be familiar with 3-4 features of civilization and be able to explain their importance, their effects, or what problems they were trying to solve.
