Unit 3, Lesson 10: ISIS
Learning Target: I can support my opinion on the Syrian Crisis with specific evidence.
**Note: Not all sections did this lesson, as I am trying to get the sections back on schedule.
Class Activities:
1. Students came in- and took out a piece of looseleaf. On it, they wrote 3 things they know about ISIS. We shared some things-- some kids knew a lot of stuff; some kids didn't know anything.
2. I explained that the question we'll be discussing is, "What should the United States do in response to the Syrian Crisis?" The question, really, is twofold. First, there is ISIS, who has essentially taken over Syria. They've recently attacked Paris and Lebanon, and there are threats of them attacking other places, too, including the United States. Secondly, all the terrorism and violence in Syria has caused a refugee crisis-- people flooding out of the country, fearing for their lives, trying to come into the United States and Europe.
3. We briefly went through a powerpoint, getting some background information on Syria, ISIS, and the refugee crisis. Students took notes on the same sheet of looseleaf.
Papers handed in today:
"How does the presence of elements affect both ancient and modern-day civilization?" handout
Homework:
3 Reads the article below (do it on the same sheet of loose leaf)
OR
Do some research in preparation for the discussion we'll have on the following day. Make sure to take notes on the sheet of paper, including sources.
